Here at Boatbookings we are constantly looking for new and exciting destinations to test our sailing skills. Looking ahead to next summer, we think it’s time to shake it up a bit and head to the extraordinary destination of the Anacortes, Washington, USA, for some incredible whale watching!
Just 78 miles north of Seattle, you will come to Anacortes, a town rich in history on the island of Figalgo. The starting point for your charter, you are just a short sail away to the Pacific Northwest‘s secluded coves and quaint bustling seaside towns.
The San Juan Islands, consisting of over 170 islands, are strung like jewels up and down the Pacific Northwest coastline. With so many islands to explore, the possibilities for your charter are limitless.
While here, immerse yourself in the rich history of these islands. Visit the English and American camps on San Juan Island, the location of the historic “Pig War” between the American Army and British Royal Navy that began in the summer of 1859 after an American settler shot a British pig. Take a stroll through Moran Mansion at Rosario Resort where Seattle Shipbuilder and Mayor Robert Moran once lived. Sailors have been drawn to these islands for centuries and long before the Spanish and English sailors arrived. Native Americans inhabited the area and their rich heritage survives to this day.
The islands boasts a rich array of wildlife adding to the general excitement of your charter. From May through to September, the local Orca pods are in residence and the San Juan islands are home to the largest concentration of Bald Eagles in the United States. Great Blue Herons and Black Oystercatchers call these islands home in winter, and you will also spy Trumpeter Swans and Canada Geese.
You can expect temperatures of around 80 degrees Fahrenheit in the summer and 40 degrees F in the winter. A happy confluence of weather systems also accounts for the high level of air quality you’ll appreciate across the San Juans.
There are several yachts available for charter and we would recommend the Beneteau 35 with two cabins, which accommodates up to four guests and is the perfect choice for sailing around this region full of nature’s marvels.
Another fabulous choice is the Beneteau 403, which accommodates up to six people in three cabins, and sails well in all conditions. Both offer style and comfort for you to cruise this spectacular landscape.
