The Mediterranean is one of the most popular yacht charter destinations in the world with many diverse landscapes and cultures to explore. Here are our top three yacht charter destinations in the Mediterranean Sea.
The Balearic Islands which include Mallorca, Menorca, Formentera and Ibiza are a veritable playground for sailing and cruising. Mallorca, the biggest island is a great place to start. Pick up your yacht from Palma and look back at the city with its impressive cathedral and Almudaina Palace dominating the skyline of this ancient Roman city. From there you can head out to explore the world famous beaches and coves that line the coastline of this varied and cultured island.
If glamour, beach clubs and dancing are more your style then Ibiza is for you! This island is famous for its nightlife, chic boutiques and restaurants but this pine covered island is also littered with tranquil coves where you can wile away lazy afternoons.
Just 6 kilometres south of Ibiza is the small island of Formentera perfect for a day trip to lunch in one of the many beach restaurants or lie on the pristine beaches its famed for.
The French Riviera or Côte d’Azur really needs no introduction. Renowned for being the destination of choice for the rich and famous there are some little known spots here where you can get away from it all!
Porquerolles island just off the picturesque seaside town of Hyères is well worth a visit. There are no cars allowed here and so you can enjoy and explore this tranquil and beautiful spot by renting bicycles and taking in the sounds of the cicadas and the sights of this nature reserve measuring just 7 kilometres in length and 3 kilometres wide.
From here you can sail along the coast towards Marseille, taking in the beautiful, rocky Calanques and stopping into the small seaside town of Cassis, or you could head in the opposite direction and soak up some of the glamour and sophistication of St Tropez, Cannes and Monaco.
My final pick for top places to bareboat charter in the Mediterranean is the iconic Italian Amalfi Coast. This rocky and mountainous coastline is rich in history, culture and gastronomy. The towns and villages of the Amalfi cling to the coastline and each has a very distinct feel. The next village along from the biggest town in this area, Salerno, (and a good place to start your charter) is Vieri Sul Mare, you can moor in the marina here and take in the buildings which are adorned with bright and unique ceramics and brickwork for which this town is famous for producing.
The towns of Cetane, Maiori, Minori, Atrani, Amalfi, Praiano and Positano are all unique and should be visited and explored with time to visit the local roman ruins, the stunning cathedrals and of course to wander the streets, sample the local delicacies and relax in the many fabulous bars and restaurants the region has to offer.
A sailing charter on the Amalfi Coastline would not be complete without a visit to the island of Capri just a short cruising distance away.
