Project ATLAS, a new 110m Superyacht Charter Concept!

Project ATLAS is a new and exciting Superyacht concept collaboration between H2 Yacht Design and Laurent Giles Superyacht Architects. ATLAS is a modern motor yacht which combines the efficiencies of sail power, to improve its green credentials. She will be a contemporary 5 deck Superyacht, yet demonstrates the elegance that is possible with the combination of a motor / sail yacht.

Like most modern Superyachts, ATLAS will feature a simple and elegant design, creating a contemporary yet classic aesthetic appearance. She will feature a combination of striking and soft flowing curves, with spacious decks, making her a very popular choice for entertaining friends, families and event groups. She will feature a 7m infinity swimming pool, including a waterfall feature which leads to a swim platform. She will also feature twin Jacuzzi’s, as well as large sunbathing areas and a bar/ stylish lounge area, even more reason why she would be the perfect yacht for large events. The yacht is architecturally designed to make the most of the sun, with the inclusion of an open sundeck, perfect for sun fanatics!

ATLAS’s exterior will feature a large skylight which will flood the interior of the yacht with natural light. Each guest suite will incorporate a private balcony. The vessel will incorporate the most modern tenders and toys, yet will be discrete and these will remain out of sight, emphasising the focus on aesthetics. ATLAS will be able to cruise easily at 16 knots with the use of both motor and sails, saving between 40% and 60% on fuel, as well as increasing the range. This is a realistic achievement and will outperform any other ‘green solution’ on the market. There are active stabilisers that can be used under power and at anchor, which will ensure comfort on the water. Moreover, the natural damping of the sails offer free stabilisation.

There is a diesel electric power plant, which is designed to be totally flexible with the use of the sails. The diesel electric combination can alone power the vessel to a maximum speed of 18 knots with a range without sail assist of 6,000 nautical miles.  She is designed for up to 20 guests and is ideal for extended cruising. She would make for a unique charter experience. If you would like to find our more information on futuristic yacht designs, please watch this space. Luxury Yacht Charter for Abu Dhabi Grand Prix 2012

The Abu Dhabi Grand Prix is widely renowned as one of the most exciting and fascinating races in the World Tour. This year will be no different. Will Sebastian Vettel be able to knock Fernando Alonso off his top spot by the time this race comes around, or will the Abu Dhabi race at the Yas Marina circuit prove to be the most important race of the year, only time will tell.

The emirate of Abu Dhabi is much larger than the others, making up some 87% of the country’s total area. With oil said to be a resource which will run out by 2100, it is no surprise that the emirate is making the most of this priceless resource, creating what only can be described as a mecca for the most luxurious of lifestyles. Unlike Dubai, Abu Dhabi remains a distinctive Arab city, as well as being green and lush. There is also a lack of traffic jams compared to Dubai, making it a much more pleasant and appealing place to live. After closely watching Dubai’s phenomenal growth, Abu Dhabi has chosen its development projects wisely, and while the laid-back feel might eventually change, the local Emirate flavour of the capital appears certain to remain!

One of our favourite yachts available for charter during the Grand Prix is JAMILA, a beautiful Sunseeker 50, which has a great flybridge, perfect for watching the race from. Another yacht, which would be ideal for charter during the Abu Dhabi Grand Prix is SPIRIT OF ZEN, a Pershing 88SPIRIT OF ZEN has a tremendous blend of warm cherry wood and cream leather interior, making for a homely yet contemporary feel. On board, there are four spacious cabins, all ensuite, with televisions installed and a top of the range entertainment system at your fingertips throughout.

Please see here for information about chartering a yacht during the Abu Dhabi Grand Prix. If you’re a fan of Formula One, why not take a look at our page dedicated to the Monaco Grand Prix, taking place on 26th May 2013.

Golden Advice on New Builds and Major Refits (by Guest Blogger Phil Friedman)

Experience is Just as Important as Talent

If you’re considering building a new yacht for charter service, or thinking about refitting the one you have now, you might think carefully about the team you employ to plan and manage the work. The successful completion of a new construction or major refit project requires understanding what is within the realm of possibility to accomplish, and what is not. Raw talent often embodies vision and creativity, but concepts do not on their own turn into reality, especially on the shipbuilding shop floor. One major pitfall into which many new build and major refit projects step is setting off in pursuit of objectives that will take way too long, and cost way too much to achieve — if indeed they can ever be achieved at all.

I remember one large-yacht build project, to which I came as a project consultant/manager after it was begun. The development of the project was stalled because the initial concept called for a semi-displacement hull to be matched with a quite voluminous tri-deck superstructure. The naval architects involved were very talented and visionary, but in the relatively early stages of their careers. They had not been able to secure classification society approval for the design because of the yachts calculated stability curve. And out of frustration, the buyer/owner was preparing to walk away from the deal.

Looking at the parameters for speed and range, I determined that if the buyer would accept just three knots less top speed, we could switch to a well proven full displacement hull form, from a noted European N.A. firm, which hull form would handily satisfy the classification society’s requirement for stability, without any compromises as to the vessel’s general arrangement (GA) or other critical factors. I made the suggestion at a late night meeting of all parties, secured approval from the buyer, and released the original naval architects from further employment on the project.

Flying home from the meeting, I found myself sitting on the plane next to the naval architects in question. To say the least, they were unhappy and defensive, saying that they had not anticipated the problems we were having securing classification approval for the design of the new yacht, in respect of its projected stability. I explained to them that they were not being paid simply for what they did, but more importantly for what they knew. The hard truth was, and remains to this day, they should have known putting a tri-deck superstructure on the semi-displacement hull form variant which they had, admittedly, used previously with success, would cause issues in regard of stability. The fact was they should have counseled all involved, right from the beginning, that a switch to a full displacement hull form was the way to go. Instead, their lack of sufficiently broad experience, and their failure to identify a critical potential roadblock, had delayed the project several months, and almost killed it entirely.Photo_Anson-Bell-2_edit11Obviously, talent and enthusiasm are what breathe excitement and life into a developing project. They are what motivate buyers and owners to build yachts and undertake major refits in the first place. But all the talent in the world cannot deliver a properly completed yacht within budget and on a reasonable time schedule — without the experience needed to keep the project from heading down avenues that are very likely to be dead ends. In the main, yacht building is the creative realization of the possible, which, I submit, makes experience just as important as talent. And you can take that to the bank.

NOTE: This post is adapted from Phil Friedman’s recently published eBook, Ten Golden Rules for Successful New Build Projects. Comments on the eBook by noted industry professionals have included:

From Stephen Moon (Board Certified Admiralty and Maritime Law Specialist, Stephen M. Moon, P.A., Cocoa, FL, USA): “Your e-book is excellent. I should have been doing a lot of other things this morning but I could not resist reading the e-book as soon as I had a break… Your remarks are very insightful and will be appreciated by many. I have a much better understanding of the events leading up to the actual build process and the  important issues to consider before construction now. Your e-book is a quick, must read for anyone involved in a new build project or major refit.”

A Day in the life of an Intern, Part III

The natural beauty of Fiji!

Following on from A Day in the life of an Intern, Part II, Part III will summarise the highlights and exciting roles of our interns to date. The summer season has slowly come to an end and what a season it has been. The Riviera has once again shown why it is one of the best tourist hotspots, with fantastic weather, cuisine and attractions. The Summer season has been as busy as ever with a record number of charters than ever before. We have been graced by amazing weather, even in September, making the French Riviera such a desirable destination. Our interns have been busy organising many successful day charters from Cannes and St Tropez, giving them great experience.

Adam and Ben were fortunate enough to visit the Cannes Boat Show 2012, a fantastic exhibition of some of the worlds finest Catamaran’s, Motor and Sailboats. They spent the afternoon viewing and critiquing a range of motor boats, as well as meeting some of the industries leading brokers and salesmen. Adam and Ben were even luckier the following week when they were invited to the Monaco Yacht Show 2012, one of the worlds most prestigious yachting exhibitions. This was an incredible experience for our two interns, who visited boats ranging in size from 16m to 60m! We saw a beautiful Mangusta 130 at anchor, which included a ride in one of the fastest tenders on the market, reaching speeds of up to 40 knots! The Monaco Yacht Show was a great place for networking, where our Interns were introduced to and built relationships with key suppliers and manufacturers.

Having started his Internship in the height of high season, Ben has made many connections within the yachting world. He was invited along to a day out onboard REHAB with Managing Director, Capucine de Vallée and Charter Director, Mimi Andain. This was an incredible day and opened his eyes to what an amazing experience chartering a luxury yacht is.

Ben, “ My day onboard REHAB was truly special; from our lunch reservation at Paloma Beach, to visiting the Iles de Lerins, to the crew, everything was perfect. I would recommend chartering a yacht to anyone, there is no better luxurious day out!”

As explained in Part II, our interns have various responsibilities, and in order that they learn the business of yacht chartering, there are many areas they can explore. Both Ben and Adam have been given the responsibility of handling charter enquiries worldwide, utilitizing Ben’s expertise on Fiji, as well as his keen passion for bareboat sailboats, and Adam’s interest in Malaysia. On top of this, Adam has been given the responsibility of coordinating the Boatbookings.com Affiliate Partner Program, which he has found to be extremely interesting, communicating with lots of people, and helping all affiliates to bring in worthwhile leads, with a view to make some commission on sales. If you’re interested in becoming an affiliate, information can be found above.

Our new intern, Benjamin, has been given the duty to upload and maintain boats, something which is very important for Boatbookings.com, making sure that yachts are, at alltimes, up to date, so that the customer is given real-time information. Another reason for this is so that all interns learn about the products they are selling when they are first introduced to the company. Another interesting project for the interns, is that of the Guest Blogger Program, which has now been set up. We already have a few guest authors, and are always on the lookout for more. For more information on the Guest Blogger Program, please see here.

Boatbookings.com provide a truly unique Internship program and there is no better place to learn about one of the worlds most luxurious sectors than in the South of France. If you are interested about enquiring about our internships or would like to apply, please contact our Managing Director, Capucine De Vallée: [email protected]
