Sampling the finest Caribbean Gastronomy on your Luxury Yacht Charter

CariThe Caribbean is often described as the crossroads of the world, thanks to the trade winds that lead many from all over the world to the British Virgin Islands. History has seen a succession of conquerors and cultures pass, bringing with them many distinctive foods, flavours and styles of cookery that remain very popular today.  The Arawaks were followed by the Caribs, who saw explorers and sea captains knock on their door as they travelled in the search of the New World. Colonists, settlers and descendants of Spanish, Dutch, English and French origin brought with them their respective cultures and cuisines. The East Indian population left their mark on the local cuisine with their distinctive curries [Colombos}, condiments [Chutneys] and Roti, which remain present to this day.

The African Slave population brought many exotic foodstuffs, such as Okra and Yams, as well as many greens, beans and roots. These ingredients combined with their cooking techniques and seasonings created Creole cookery and famous dishes such as Gumbo, which can be found all over the Caribbean and southern United States. Whilst browsing the Internet, we came across a fantastic recipe on the Sugar Apple Blog for a Spicy Chicken and Sausage Gumbo, which we thought we would share with you. The combination of the holy trinity [Celery/Bell Pepper/ Onion] with the spice of the chilli pepper, smoky sausage and okra is a match made in heaven!

Spicy Caribbean Chicken and Sausage Gumbo
1 pound okra, cut into 1/4? slices
6 tablespoons cooking oil
1 large green bell pepper, cored, seeded and diced
2 stalks celery, diced
2 medium onions, peeled and diced
1 scotch bonnet or other hot pepper, minced (optional)
2 cloves garlic, peeled and minced
1 pound andouille sausage or smoked kielbasa, cut in half lengthways and cut crosswise into 1/2? slices
6 tomatoes, peeled, seeded and diced OR 2 tins diced tomatoes
4 cups chicken stock
1 bay leaf
5-6 sprigs fresh thyme
1/4 teaspoon cayenne pepper
1 teaspoon salt
2 pounds boneless, skinless chicken breasts or thighs, trimmed of fat and cut into 1 1/2? cubes

Not much of a cook? Want your own private chef to cook you a taste of the Caribbean? Want to sample some of the best Caribbean cuisine on your own luxury yacht charter? We would love to make both of these things a reality and arrange an experience of a lifetime on a crewed catamaran, motor or sailboat. We have a great selection of boats for all budgets and one of our favourites this month is MOONSTONE, a 62ft Sunreef Catamaran with 4 fantastic cabins. There is no better way to enjoy her this Winter than to host a private dining event with close friends and family in her open-plan saloon. Accommodation is provided in 3 double en-suite cabins and a twin, which are decorated in a contemporary, yet classic style.

Get the Most from a Crewed Charter

We’ve compiled a few key things to remember when going on a crewed charter, for those who are thinking of charter, or those who have booked a charter for the first time and are wondering what exactly to expect. A full list of things to consider can be found here.

• Before going on a charter, it is always good to be clear with your broker exactly what you want to get out of your experience. Is it for a particular family event, or a business contract? The more you help the broker, the more fantastic they can arrange your charter to be, making sure you relax the most you can while on board. For the benefit of the crew, let your broker know of any medical issues, and of any expectations from your charter, including your hobbies, so that the broker can help the crew to prepare for your charter.

• The Captain should be your best friend. Remember, they is at the helm of the yacht, so it’s important to respect them and their crew. At the same time, the more friendly you are to the crew on board, the more willing to make your charter even more memorable they will be.

• It’s important to be flexible (to some extent) on your itinerary. If the captain doesn’t want to sail to a particular place because it will be difficult for any reason, keep an open mind. Remember that the crew on these yachts sail for a living, and they know exactly when and where to go, making sure that you have the charter of a lifetime.

• While enjoying yourself, safety is a concern. Always remember you’re on a yacht, and don’t go over board enjoying yourself (excuse the pun). There are lots of rules that guests have to deal with. Please don’t try and get the crew to bend them, they are there for a reason!

• Help your broker as much as possible. Mentioned above, it’s important to help your broker with any expectations you have, or anything in particular you want to get out of your charter. If you establish a trusting relationship with the broker, share your needs, and ask for their advice, you will find that the process is enjoyable and you may learn about new yachts or destinations that you hadn’t heard about.

Luxury Charter Yachts at the Deuxième Salon de la Plaisance du Golfe de St Tropez aux Marines de Cogolin 2012

On Friday 2nd November, we, the Boatbloggings team were present at the Salon de la Plaisance du Golfe de St Tropez, at the Marines de Cogolin. As Boatbloggings.com is the news site for Boatbookings.com, meeting and networking with many suppliers was very important.

Of the yachts on show, many were for sale, but we had two highlights of the day, which we would love to share with you.

Med 48

The Med 48 is a new build yacht available for charter for the 2013 Summer season, from St Tropez. She is a beautiful new design which reminded us of a Van Dutch, with a sleek and modern exterior. Her interior was spacious, with two double cabins both en suite and a small galley area too. One of our favourite parts of her was her was her sunbed area, which can be configured in many different ways, from two benches facing each other with a table in the middle, two benches facing the same way, to collapsing the seats down to reveal a full sunbed, with enough room for several to comfortably enjoy the sun. If you would like to charter a yacht from St Tropez, click here for more information.

La Gazelle des Sables

This beautifully crafted small sailboat was a great part of our day. Please see the video below for a fantastic snippet of her in action in the port of Cogolin.

Luxury Charter Yacht Gadgets, including an Amphibious Quadbike!

Keeping with our recent theme of James Bond style gossip, our latest blog covers all of the best luxury yachting gadgets to have. Not only is this to coincide with the upcoming release of Skyfall but with Christmas coming soon, we thought this would be a great chance to start having a think about those all important presents.

Amphibious Quadbike

Just imagine – your yacht docks somewhere, and you hop on a jetski to land. When you get to land, you don’t get off the jetski, but it turns into a quadbike, with which you can go exploring. We’re completely in awe by this new gadget, made by Gibbs Sports Amphibians, and is called Quadski.

Top iPhone Yachting Apps:

Yachting Weather

Yacthing Weather is a great app for Captains, sailors, or anyone interested in the weather on the waters. It’s a great application that we’ve been using for some months now, and each update just gets better and better. It gives you all the information you would need to plan your charter, from temperature, wind direction and speed, wave height, wave length, wave period, storm risk, precipitation risk, humidity, pressure. It’s a great weather app in general, not only useful for those on the water.

Available for free, we highly recommend trying the app out!

Compass Eye – Marine Navigation and Bearings

Compass Eye is another great iPhone app, available at £2.99, that works with real-time camera and map views, bearing markers and an 8x zoom. Compass Eye is a fun way to make sure of your bearing. As most compass apps rely on a horizontal bearing and work only on that angle, but Compass Eye works on any angle or with any orientation, with the use of the camera.
