Boatbookings Meg Toppa Reports on Sailing Yacht AQUARIUS: Delivery to Victory in the St. Maarten Heineken Regatta

Boatbookings regatta expert Meg Toppa is keeping her fingers crossed for her highly skilled charter client and his race crew who will be racing to win in the St. Maarten Heineken Regatta on board charter race yacht AQUARIUS.

AQUARIUS is a Nauter Swan 601 high performance sailing yacht with lightweight design for sailing at top racing speed. AQUARIUS classic lines and meticulously handcrafted interiors belie the most advanced building techniques and materials used in construction. AQURIUS features custom interiors and deck layout while maintaining hull shape and rig configuration that comply with one-design class rules.

Meg explains that AQUARIUS’ charter client has an impressive history of previous race participation aboard his own yacht, but this will be the first time he will be racing the superb charter Swan 601, AQUARIUS. He will set the agenda, although the captain of AQUARIUS will be on board (as per insurance requirements), and is sure to lend a most valuable hand to the team.

In a recent press release, AQUARIUS, a middle range contender, was described as “a dangerous presence” in the St. Maarten Heineken Regatta, the first of three competitions that the AQUARIUS team will undertake. Prior to the Rolex Regatta in St. Thomas, March 25-27 and the Tortola BVI Spring Regatta, March 28-April 3, a between race cruise week is scheduled for March 17-23, when the charter client onboard AQUARIUS will get a little respite.

The St. Maarten Heineken Regatta is scheduled from March 3-6, which puts AQUARIUS in the delivery mode at present. Toppa explains, “there are three modes that the race yacht can be in; delivery, cruise, or race modes. Each of these three modes requires changing the sheets, halyards and sails.”

The delivery mode entails lots of logistics, shipping the container with gear, and hotel and flight arrangements for the crew of six, required by any transit exceeding 300 miles. This allows two watches of three crew; one navigating, one helming and one trimming.

This is also a critical time of preparation, which the Captain of AQUARIUS, ChrisRingdahl, describes as very labor intensive. In fact just a couple of days ago, he and his wife were still sanding the keel past midnight. This is all part of playing to win.

Coming up is racing mode on AQUARIUS, when on each exhilarating race day the yacht is stripped to reduce weight and the forward berth becomes the sail locker. At day’s end, numerous chores include removing the drums from each of the nine winches for cleaning.

Keep checking Boatbloggings for AQUARIUS updates from Boatbookings racing expert Meg Toppa. She will be reporting up to the minute news (hopefully from the rail) throughout the St. Maarten Heineken Regatta.

A Gift for the Yachtsman Who Has Everything: Adopt a Sea Turtle and Track Its Movements via the Web

Here’s a novel idea for gifting the precocious child or the yachtsman who has everything.

SEATURTLE.ORG has tax-deductible donation packages that let you adopt a satellite-tagged sea turtle, or other animal, whose movements you can track through their website.

Seaturtle.org and partner organizations have fitted sea turtles, whale sharks, sea lions, even a peregrine falcon with high-tech data transmitters that relay information about their location via satellite. The information helps researchers better understand animal behavior and improve laws and regulations that protect endangered species.

Visit the SEATURTLE.ORG adoption page to view the names, nationalities and descriptions of many adorable animals like Jah, an Argentinean loggerhead or Lucy Jack, a flatback from northern Australia, or Navajo, a green turtle from New England. Seaturtle.org also has a shop with an assortment of items including apparel embroidered with the seaturtle.org logo, cute stuffed animals, even sea turtle tattoos. If you wish to adopt an animal as a holiday gift international orders must be placed by December 11 and US orders by December 17 for a timely delivery.

YCO Yacht Company Sponsors Charity Expedition to the South Pole

Apparently nobody to date has attempted to travel the 1400 miles roundtrip from Hercules Inlet to the South Pole and back without support or assistance of any kind. Go figure. However, this week Chris Foot will attempt to complete this mission of charity to raise funds and awareness for Combat Stress, an organization dedicated to the mental health of former military personnel.

Chris, who joined the Royal Marines in 1996, has always pushed himself beyond the limit. At the age of 21 he joined the elite Special Air Service as the youngest serving member to gain acceptance. In this capacity and throughout his military career he conquered cold weather and attained mountaineering skills that prepared him for the demanding challenges of polar exploration.

Combat Stress dates back to 1919 and the welfare needs of British servicemen following World War I. Today the organization plays a major role in assisting ex-service people with mental disorders such as Post Traumatic Stress Syndrome. While the expedition costs are covered by corporate sponsorships including YCO, donations in support of Chris’ endeavors are being solicited that will go directly to Combat Stress.

Arrrrggghhhh! Climb on board the star of Pirates of the Caribbean

image of UNICORN BrigThat's right, you can get on board the yacht used as the BLACK PEARL in the Pirates of the Caribbean films and re-enact your own Captain Jack Sparrow moment. The UNICORN Brig is a 140ft masterpiece replica of an 18th Century Brig Tall Ship and is a beauty to behold without the tattered sails given to her in the film.
Built in 1948 in Finland, she now offers daily tours starting from Rodney Bay Marin on St Lucia, taking in either the Botanical Gardens or the Toraille Waterfalls & Gardens and the Sulphur Springs of St Lucia in the Caribbean.  The trip even includes a hearty meal and traditional pirate rum punch, perfect for a fantasy family day out.
