Cannes International Boat and Yacht Show 2008

The Cannes International Boat and Yacht Show 2008 is fast approaching and preparations are already underway.  The chance to showcase and exhibit to a global audience has this year attracted more than 630 of the finest yachts in the world, along with boatbuilders, service providers, equipment manufacturers and interior designers to name a few of thCannese other exhibits avaliable.  This event offers the chance to not only see the yachts but experience them on the open sea, an opportunity not to be missed.

The show this year runs from 10th-15th September.

Cannes is also host to many other international events such as the Film Festival, MIPM and the International Fireworks Competition.  These events can be turned into an even more extravagant experience by staying on a yacht and visiting the famously beautiful French Riviera.  So why not look into chartering a yacht for next year's events?  It's the only way to be seen on the Cote d'Azur!

Mipim 2009 Berth Update

The rules changed this year – the Cannes Port Authority opened the application window the 17th of March – literally at the end of the 2008 show.  Once the first 60 complete applications are in, they will sit and assign places on the Quai Albert Edouard.  After this, they will accept 30 more applications, and when these are received, they will assign the berths on the Quai du Large (across the harbour, not alongside the Palais.

As we write this, over 60 applications have been received. So if you are interested in getting a berth for next year, if you hurry you may still be able to get a berth on the Quai du Large, but all paperwork must be in soon!  For complete information, see MIPIM Yacht Charter.

Getting a boat into MIPIM 2009

We get nearly 2 requests per day for a boat for MIPIM in the old port, right next to the Palais des Festivals. While we'd be thrilled to fulfill every request, there are only 60 possible places on the Jetee Albert Edouard, and applications from 250 companies who want a boat.

There is a very specific process for getting a boat into MIPIM. Basically it's first come, first served – with a very extensive file required (contract, license, proof of payment, references, etc). We can process this application for you, but strongly recommend booking a boat for next year right now, so you'll be first in line. The submission date is in September, but the port of Cannes time stamps all applications and they're looked at in order of time stamp.

Aboard S/Y SAVANNAH during the Voiles St Tropez Regatta

Yesterday, we had the pleasure of crewing aboard SAVANNAH, an “Esprit de Tradition” yacht in the Voiles St Tropez. Esprit de tradition yachts are traditional sailing yachts that have been upgraded to use all modern technology available while still retaining their original hull.  Savannah, was refit in 1997 by Concordia from an old hull 27 meter hull in Savannah, Georgia. She is owned and raced by Ciaran Caulfield and Hugh Morrison.

The Voiles St Tropez is a glorious event, held the first week of October each year.  Over 300 of gorgeous classic sailing and modern sailing yachts (and an entire class of Wallys) converge on St Tropez to race, discuss sailing, party and generally oogle the beautiful yachts as they close out another summer in St Tropez.

The weather for Saturday was predicted to be stormy, but the crew woke up to glorious sun pounding through the haze of late night partying at the “Cave” (St Tropez’ most exclusive nightclub).  The sight of hundreds of racing yachts readying for the final race is amazing to behold – all in their yacht’s uniforms as they prepare the sails and discuss tactics for the day.

SAVANNAH’s braintrust, Hugh and Ciaran, planning the tactics for the race.

The weather was quite calm, so once on the water, there was little to do but cruise around, check the sails again and watch all the other beautiful yacht cruise by.  At noon, the appointed start time, there was barely a breeze, so the race was delayed.  The wind began stiffening, as it does so often, any by 1:00 there were 8 knots of wind.  We got the warning gun at 1:07, signalling 9 minutes to start. Sails up, jockyeying for position – the calm was now a buzz of activity.

The typical pre race chaos ensued, and we crossed the starting line at 1:18 pm. Here we are as we cross the start.

It was not the best of starts, and our nemesis SHAMROCK, although starting behind us, had greater speed and better position, and soon passed us while covering our wind.

With gennekers up heading down the first leg, no other boats in our class (Esprit de Tradition) could keep pace with SAVANNAH and SHAMROCK –  it would clearly be a two boat race.  Here you can see two of our class that we left behind.  At the first mark, we were a minute arears of SHAMROCK.  We began closing as we sailed back up toward St Tropez, but couldn’t cut the lead to less than 40 seconds.

We crossed the finish line just over a minute behind SHAMROCK.  The official results, with adjusted times were not live on the web site at the time of this writing (probably a result of too much partying last night), so we’re still waiting to see how we ultimately ended up.  We had been 3rd in the overall, and were hoping to retain that spot!

After the race, we took part in the traditional post race festivities, which included hitting the bar at the Cafe de Paris, and cocktails aboad the beautiful Hallowe’en classic yacht.  When last seen, the crew of SAVANNAH were preparing for dinner and another night at the Cave to close the club for the year.

If you have a chance to visit St Tropez during the first week of October, it is highly recommended!  Thanks as always to Ciaran Caulfield for letting me crew on his gorgeous yacht!!

MIPIM yacht availability

MIPIM is a huge real estate industry trade show that takes place every year in Cannes, France during the month of March.  Of interest to the boating community are the large number of spectacular yachts that are chartered to sit alongide the Palais des Festivals, serving as trade show booths and entertainment venues at the show.

If you’re interested in chartering a yacht for MIPIM, you have already missed the main deadline for submission of your berth application (which was September 10).  But don’t dispair, there are still lots of things that can be done to make a “splash” at MIPIM, such as hiring a yacht for a party in Port Canto, or simply taking your best clients on a cruise to St Tropez.  Click here for complete information about chartering a yacht at MIPIM.
