Rhode Island: Serious Contender to Host 34th America’s Cup Race

The Rhode Island Economic Development Corporation (RIEDC) is enthusiastic about hosting the 2013 34th America’s Cup following requests for discussion by BMW-Oracle race officials. The event was slated for San Francisco but some concerns with negotiations have prompted BMW-Oracle to reconsider.

The RIEDC anticipates both immediate and long-term benefits for Rhode Island, which is battling an 11 per cent unemployment rate. The event is likely to attract the largest sporting, tourism and media crowds in Rhode Island history.

The state has already begun planning infrastructure improvements to Fort Adams State National Park, which encompasses 170 acres of state owned land and marine assets in Newport. Beside the creation of immediate jobs, if the site wins the bid to host the event it will affirm Newport as an international sailing center and attract a range of future sailing and yachting events to its shores.

Bringing the America’s Cup back to Rhode Island will be most beneficial to the marine manufacturing trade. Boat-builders, carpenters and artisans hard hit by a sluggish economy believe the event will reinvigorate the marine industry. America’s Cup officials are expected to announce the chosen city by the end of this year.

Race Winning Potential: Green Marine Rudder for 216-Foot Vitters Sloop

Green Marine, a leading specialist in high-tech carbon fiber molding, announced their latest accomplishment, the completion of one of the world’s largest composite rudders for an in-build project at Vitters Shipyard in the Netherlands. A performance boat builder in Lymington, UK, Green Marine has built many of the world’s renowned racing and cruising yachts, including Volvo Round the World Race contenders, America’s Cup challengers, and cutting-edge cruising superyachts.

The rudder, designed by Dubois Naval Architects for a new 216-foot sloop, is constructed of carbon fiber for outstanding strength and stiffness at the lowest possible weights. A test program was created to validate the properties of the chosen materials and if the 25-foot rudder meets performance expectations it is likely to impact construction techniques throughout the marine industry.

Green Marine used high-tech 3D precision measurement equipment during construction, which played a vital role in the validation of the accuracy of the foil shape and the bearing alignment. Once in service the rudder will see enormous twisting and bending loads and the Dubois team calculate that the reaction load at the lower bearing will reach up to 160 tonnes. The rudder also features a crash tip that will snap off in the event of the vessel grounding.

Specializing in working with carbon fiber, Green Marine is well placed to have built this innovative rudder, having built rudders for other Vitters super yachts, and more than 50 racing and cruising yachts ranging from 40-130 feet. In recent years, the company has also applied its expertise to a wide variety of composite industrial and commercial components, including steering systems, canards, hatches, water tight doors and superstructures for racing and super yachts.

The modern 128’ version, YANKEE J-H3, has a goal to star as both a winning racer and an elegant charter yacht. Scheduled for launch in early 2012, YANKEE J-H3 is intended to participate during the UK 2012 Olympics at the J-Class regatta events in June and July of that summer, after which she will be available for charter.

YANKEE J-H3 features all-aluminum design by Dykstra & Partners Naval Architects, with aluminum and teak deck, 170-foot carbon mast, rigging and 3-DL sails with a 10.005 square-foot area. Interiors feature accommodations for a crew of seven with pipe cots for an additional 21 racing crew. St Barts Bucket Recap

With a record breaking fleet of 39 megayachts, the 2010 St. Bart’s Bucket has come to a close. At the end of it all, it was the J-Class Ranger that took the 2010 Bucket. John Williams and his crew raced consistently and well, earning a well-Meteor at teh St Barths Bucketdeserved victory. Second place belonged to the Perini Navi Andromeda la Dea (which you can charter through Boatbookings.com), with the Perini Navi P2 in third place overall.

The sailing and the shore side activities were of the customary caliber. Conditions included sunny skies and fluky winds from 10-15 knots. Shoreside festivities included a yacht hop on Friday night, Bucket Bash on Saturday and Awards Presentations on Sunday.

Though St. Bart’s has long been considered the playground of the rich and famous, the local communities are solidly behind the bucket regatta. President Bruno Magras greeted the crowd at the Awards Presentation on Sunday to thank participants and invite them all back next year for the 25th anniversary of the bucket regattas.
