Yacht Charter Trends for 2025

catamarans are hot for 2025

Boatbookings’ view of what’s hot for 2025!

Boatbookings Charter Experts are in constant contact with captains, boat owners and clients all over the world. We got together recently to discuss trends in the yachting business that we’re seeing for 2026. Here are the headlines!

More, bigger, quieter, cleaner catamarans and motor catamarans

This is not a new trend, but it shows no signs of slowing. People love catamarans! They are more fuel-efficient, rock less (helps prevent seasickness), can sail in shallow waters, have comfortable living spaces, cabins, and galleys, and generally provide for a superb charter. When Boatbookings was founded 20 years ago, catamarans were the exception, and sailing yachts were the rule. This has completely reversed itself.

As we’ve previously written, we love the Bali catamarans for their easy access to the foredeck, inside/outside salon, quality finishings, and overall fabulous experience. More about the advantages of Bali Catamarans.

Motor cats. Powered Catamarans are everywhere, and no longer look like a catamaran that is missing its mast! We have Power Cats in every key port, offering comfort, luxury, fuel efficiency, and quick, easy cruising to your destination.

And the catamarans are getting bigger! We’re seeing many more 50-60 foot cats in all ports, normally by Lagoon or Bali. Each foot of additional length effectively provides triple the added space, as it’s a three-dimensional boat. You won’t believe the difference in useable space between a 45- and 50-foot catamaran! We also see a lot more 70- and even 80-foot catamarans, specifically from famed luxury catamaran builder Sunreef. These truly are superyachts in catamaran form. The beginning of the end of noisy, smelly generators and diesel motors

Propulsion and electrical systems of yachts of all sizes are undergoing a silent revolution. Instead of the diesel-powered props that have been standard in nearly all yachts for the past 100 years, newly installed motors are increasingly electric. They have much greater torque and are far quieter.

These motors need to be powered by electricity, of course. Increasingly that electricity comes from solar panels, wind turbines, and propellers that act as turbines when you’re sailing. This electricity is then stored in on-board batteries that have come down dramatically in price over the past 10 years. These boats normally have a backup generator, but often it doesn’t need to be used at all, making the boat completely self-sufficient and zero-emissions! No more coughing from the fumes when you’re snorkeling around the boat.

We’re beginning to see yachts that have enough battery capacity to run the air conditioning through the night, so the noise and rumble of the generator are completely eliminated. Bliss!

The constant search for unique, unspoiled, charter destinations

While the French Riviera, Alamfi Coast, Greek Islands, and the BVI never disappoint, we’re seeing increasing demand for more exotic locations. Our top new recommendation is Raja Ampat, for its extraordinary diving, unspoiled islands, and unique culture. We also continue to see increased interest in Tahiti/Bora Bora, which is a convenient, direct 8-hour flight from LA or San Francisco.

More updates coming soon – please contact us if you’re interested in any of the above destinations or yachts!

The Power Of Choice: Why Booking A Green Charter Matters

As the world becomes even more environmentally conscious, the yacht charter industry is evolving to meet this growing demand for eco-conscious travel. Booking a greener crewed catamaran is no longer just a trend; it’s a meaningful way to enjoy the ultimate luxury while minimizing your environmental impact. Choosing a sustainable yacht charter not only benefits our oceans but also enhances your overall experience by aligning with the natural beauty you’re there to enjoy. At Boatbookings, we want to push this shift toward greener yachting. Here are some of the reasons why your choice of charter in 2025 matters for the future:

1. Protect Marine Environments

From the Caribbean to the Mediterranean, the allure of a yacht charter has always been its access to pristine waters, vibrant coral reefs, and unspoiled coastlines. Unfortunately, traditional yachts can negatively impact these environments through fuel emissions, waste discharge, and noise pollution. Greener yachts and catamarans equipped with eco-friendly technologies, such as hybrid propulsion systems, solar panels, and advanced wastewater treatment systems, are designed to reduce or eliminate these harmful effects. By choosing one of our greener crewed charter catamarans, you actively contribute to preserving the ecosystems you explore, ensuring that future generations can enjoy them, too.

2. Lead the Shift

The industry often sets the tone for global trends. When yacht charter clients prioritize greener options, it signals to shipbuilders, designers, and operators that sustainability is a key consideration. This demand further drives innovation, encouraging the development of more eco-friendly materials, energy-efficient systems, and waste management solutions. By booking a greener yacht, you’re not only enjoying a guilt-free vacation but also influencing the broader industry to embrace sustainable practices.

3. Improve Your Connections

Aboard a greener charter yacht, you’ll find yourself more attuned to the environment. Solar-powered systems operate silently, eliminating the noise of traditional engines and allowing you to fully immerse yourself in the tranquility of your surroundings. Hybrid propulsion systems reduce vibrations, making marine wildlife encounters more natural and less intrusive. This deeper connection with nature enhances the luxury yachting experience, turning it into a harmonious journey.

4. Eco-Friendly Features Enhance Comfort

There are many yachts on the market now that are designed with cutting-edge technology that prioritizes both sustainability and comfort. For instance, many eco-conscious yachts now feature energy-efficient air conditioning systems and innovative hull designs that improve stability and fuel efficiency. Renewable energy sources, such as solar and wind, provide a clean and quiet power supply, allowing you to enjoy luxury amenities without compromise. Some greener yachts, from recycled wood to organic fabrics, incorporate sustainable materials in their interiors, creating elegant yet environmentally responsible spaces.

5. Set a Positive Example

Booking a green yacht in 2025 sends a powerful message to everyone else. It showcases your commitment to sustainability and demonstrates that luxury and environmental responsibility can coexist. It’s an opportunity to inspire others to consider their own travel choices and make decisions that align with a greener future.

Make Your Next Charter Count

Every decision we make, big or small, impacts the world around us. Booking one of our greener crewed catamarans is more than a vacation choice; it’s a statement about the kind of world we want to live in. As the yachting industry embraces sustainability, your support for greener charters begins to accelerate this shift toward more eco-conscious yachting. Showcasing Sustainability At METSTRADE 2024

Last week, the maritime industry gathered in Amsterdam for the iconic METSTRADE show. At Boatbookings, we are passionate about sustainability and greener solutions for the boating industry. We regularly stay ahead of the developments and innovations; here we have put together some of our favourite launches and news from METSTRADE 2024:

A Sustainability Focus

This year, the Superyacht Sustainability Route returned, highlighting solutions verified by the Water Revolution Foundation. These solutions aid efficiency, reduce environmental impact, promote corporate responsibility, and minimise waste.

The show encompassed a range of seminars and workshops from leaders in the maritime industry to discuss the current and future goals of sustainability within the marine world. We were pleased to see that sustainability was truly a cornerstone of the discussions throughout the show, marking significant change and development in the future.

The Launch Of YETI

Along with their involvement in the Sustainability Route, the Water Revolution Foundation also launched its new YETI software tool to reduce yachting’s eco-footprint. The Yacht Environmental Transparency Index results from an industry-wide collaboration and is designed for the yachting industry to access, compare, and improve its environmental footprint. The tool calculates critical ecological factors, such as propulsion and energy usage in hotel loads, providing an environmental profile for each yacht.

Garmin Improve Packaging

Garmin also presented various solutions to minimise its footprint, such as packaging improvements. The company explained how it uses less packaging and drastically reduces plastic while eliminating 90% of foam within product boxes.

Greener Teak From Flexiteek

Flexiteek launched its latest synthetic teak decking, significantly improving performance and design. The new model builds on the company’s legacy of improving sustainability. The company produces teak that replicates the appearance of natural teak while using a renewable material that reduces emissions by up to 80%.

Gori Present Hyrbid Sailing Propeller

At METSTRADE, Gori Propellers announced the development of a new hybrid folding propeller designed for electric and hybrid sailing yachts, set to launch in 2025. The new design enables sailors to switch between optimal sealing performance and power regeneration modes.

Sustainable Fabrics From Sunbrella

Sunbrella highlights its dedication to sustainability by displaying the ‘Endless Stories’ fabric collection, designed in-house, it is developed from production waste materials with up to 50% recycled fibres. It is Sunbrrella’s first dedicated range of recycled materials for marine use.

A Greener Future

This year’s shows demonstrated that sustainability is no longer an option but a transformation in the boating world. From innovative software tools to exciting product designs, the marine sector is reimagining its approach. These developments represent a collective commitment to preserving our oceans. At Boatbookings, we are excited and optimistic about the boating sector’s trajectory and look forward to continuing to support and promote these initiatives.
