About Hvar

Dating back to Neolithic times, Hvar is an island that has witnessed countless invasions from century to century, resulting in a rich cultural, archaeological and architectural heritage. Thought to be one of the ten most beautiful islands in the world, Hvar lies a short cruise away from the historic town of Split situated on the southwestern coast of Croatia.

Hvar Town is the busiest destination on the island attracting thousands during the height of summer, not only for its rich culture but also for its vibrant nightlife scene. Climb up to the Španjola Fortress
For extraordinary views of Hvar and its environs, we highly recommend a walk up to the Medieval castle overlooking the city of Hvar (if you're not up for walking, you can take a taxi) 

Explore St. Stevens Square and Hvar Cathedral
St. Stephen’s Cathedral was originally started in 1147, with the current, Baroque style finished in 1605. It is decorated in Venitian style and well worth a visit. Leading up to the Cathedral is the old town center, once a bustling market, now an enjoyable walk with shops and cafes.

Top things to do near Hvar Town

Explore the Pakleni Islands
These unspoiled islands directly off the coast of Hvar town, offer clear water and numerous small beaches for your enjoyment. The famous Carpe Diem bar and beach club (see below) and several other great restaurants are located on these islands.

Explore Stari Grad
Cruise to the north of the island to Stari Grad to enjoy a slower pace of life in the oldest town in Croatia recognized as a UNESCO World Heritage site. Find restaurants and charming chapels along secluded and shuttered streets, decorated with ceramic flower pots.

Hvar Lavender Fields
Not far inland from Hvar town (easily accessible by taxi) you can visit authentic lavender fields and buy products such as soaps and honey. Best visited in June when the lavender is in full bloom.

Gariful restaurant
A favorite of celebrities - this is the Hvar restaurant to see and be seen. Gariful offers seafood with a Japanese emphasis including sushi and can be found at the end of the esplanade on the east (left) side of the port. Specialties include Lobster Carpaccio, "Drunken" Lobster, and Wagyu beef. At the time of writing, it had a perfect 5* rating from Tripadvisor.

Dalmatino restaurant
Dalmatino restaurant is a great place for lunch or dinner if you want creative Dalmatian food including fish, pasta, and gnocchi. 

Hvar Clubs

Carpe Diem Beach Bar
Located on Marokinovack Island, just off the coast of Hvar town, is the renowned Carpe Diem Beach Bar, where DJs play under the stars late into the night. If you are into clubbing, this is arguably the best club in Croatia, with name acts and a beautiful environment. You can easily get to and from the bar by water taxi for EUR 10 or so. During the day it's a relaxed beach club where you can enjoy lunch and a sun lounger on the water. ** Note due to a recent dispute with the City of Hvar because of noise from the club, the beach club now closes at 10 pm until further notice (as of August 9, 2024).

Carpe Diem Bar (Hvar Town)
Located in Hvar Town, this lounge bar/club is open from 9 am as a bar restaurant until 10 pm, when it transforms into a nightclub until 1 am.

Hula Hula
Situated on the water a short walk west of the old town harbor, Hula Hula is renowned for excellent sunsets. Like other beach restaurants in Hvar, it transforms into a club around 10 pm.

Kiva Bar
Situated right in the old town, Kiva Bar will be packed on nearly all summer nights for a fun club experience.

Falko Beach Bar
A fun bar 2 km from Hvar Town that is fantastic for sunsets!

The Best Hvar Beaches

Pokonji Dol Beach
Just east of Hvar (a 25-minute walk or short tender ride), but far enough to be quiet and remote, you can find Pokonji Dol beach situated in a large inlet and offering two authentic Dalmatian restaurants offering the catch of the day, cold beers and sunset drinks.

Mekićevica Beach
Near Hvar, surrounded by pines, this is a fantastic beach to visit if you want a swim and to play with water toys without venturing too far from Hvar.

Zaraće Beach
This remote beach east of Hvar Town has crystal-clear water and limestone cliffs that jut out to sea  You can dive from the cliffs, or just enjoy the beach and local restaurant at the beach.

Lučišća Beach
A classic Croatian pebbled beach in a cove, only reachable by boat. Quiet, excellent swimming, untouristed.
