About Fiji

FijiFiji is an island nation in the South Pacific occupying an archipelago of over 300 islands, with over 80% of the population living on the 2 main islands of Viti Levu and Vanua Levu. It has a fascinating cultural blend of Melanesian, Polynesian, Indian and Chinese, mixed with a little European colonial history.

It is a stunning sailing destination, being the product of volcanic mountains and surrounded by warm tropical waters. Its remoteness also means that the Fijian people have retained a very non-commercial view on life, resulting in one of the friendliest places on earth. It is a land of fine beaches, coconut plantations, tropical rainforests and underwater experiences second to none.

The country is generally very safe, with very little major crime. English is spoken widely, and the country is relatively free of disease compared to many other tropical destinations.

Getting to Fiji

fiji mapNadi International Airport is Fiji’s main international gateway, and is located on the west coast of the main island of Viti Levu. It serves around 1.3 million international passengers each year, and acts as a hub to 14 other smaller airports around the archipelago.

Nadi is the home base of Air Pacific, Fiji’s national airline, which provides flights to Japan, the US, Australia, New Zealand and other South Pacific islands. Other international airlines offering regular flights include Air New Zealand, Qantas and Korean Air.

Nadi is also the tourism hub of Fiji, with a range of activities, resorts, shopping, bars and restaurants within reach. 20 minutes drive from the airport is the Port of Denarau Marina, a key starting point for sailing to the Mamanuca Islands and Yasawa Islands.

Sailing Destinations

Fiji Mama yasaMamanuca Islands and Yasawa Islands. How many endless, white sandy beaches can you handle in one holiday? You will find out when you cruise this amazing duo of island groups, arranged in one long archipelago off the west coast of Viti Levu, Fiji’s largest island.

Denarau Marina, 20 minutes from Nadi International Airport, is the gateway to this region, Fiji’s most popular sailing region, and main tourism hub.

The Mamanuca Islands are the starting point – long sandy beaches with unlimited palm trees, sparkling clear water, and coral reefs you last saw on a picture postcard.

The full range of water sports is available as you cruise north past multiple islands – game fishing, diving and snorkeling, parasailing, windsurfing, jet skiing and surfing, you can find them all in the various island resorts.

As you travel further north, the tourists start to disappear as the islands of Waya and Wayasewa approach, and you enter the Yasawa Islands. This more remote island group consists of a chain of about 20 ancient volcanic islands stretching for 80 km, several of which have dramatic cliffs climbing to hundreds of metres above sea level.

The Yasawa Islands give you the amazing scenic combinations of dramatic volcanic peaks, white sandy beaches and crystal clear lagoons. You also get the more traditional Fijian way of life, unaffected by commercial tourism in any way.

The Northern Islands, Vanua Levu and Taveuni. This really is the unexplored part of Fiji, with virtually no impact of tourism to be seen on the beaches, islands or the people and their local customs. In fact, a yacht is often the only way to visit many of the remote islands and villages.

Charters could start from the town of Savusavu on Vanua Levu, with typical destinations being Koro Island, Taveuni or the Ringold Isles. True peace and tranquility can be found all round this area, with many live aboard boats specialising in diving and fishing your only companions.

Climate and Weather

The climate is typically tropical marine, with little temperature variation throughout the year. The best sailing months are March through to November, with tropical cyclones reducing sailing possibilities between December and February.

Southeast trade winds tend to prevail between May and October, bringing slightly cooler temperatures. The rainy season is from November to April, and is characterised by heavy but brief local showers. However, most of the rain is driven by topography, not seasons, with the mountainous regions getting by far most of the rain.

Scuba Diving

fiji snorkeling

Fiji is a paradise for diving enthusiasts, with many world-class snorkeling and diving sites to be found throughout the 300 islands. A massive variety of tropical fish can be found, as well as reef sharks, manta rays, turtles and dolphins.

The water temperature is constantly warm, and visibility often more than 50 metres. Many of the Mamanuca Island resorts will offer lessons, while many live aboard diving boats travel to the more remote northern dive sites.

Fijian Cuisine

Largely due to its multicultural history, Fijian cuisine today is an amazing mix of Indian, Chinese, Western and Polynesian influences. Common ingredients include yam, cassava, breadfruit and taro root, with meats such as beef, pork and poultry being a staple of this complex mixture. Of course, seafood is also a local favorite.

Local exotic fruits are found in abundance in beverages, salads and appetisers, with fresh coconut cream being used a lot both in cooking and as a sauce.
