Monte Argentario and Orbetello Yacht Charter Overview
Monte Argentario is a large and beautifully landscaped promontory (peninsula) in Southern Tuscany next to the commune of Orbetello formed from an island that became naturally connected to the mainland by three sand bars now covered in woodland and separated by two lagoons. The peninsula hosts a nature reserve of intense ecological diversity and is administered by the World Wildlife Fund.
The dramatic cliff drops and relatively unspoilt sandy beaches are edged with the characteristic Mediterranean scrub of thyme, myrtle, rock roses, lavender, wild olive and fig resulting in rare coastal haven that is close to Rome and becoming a popular and fashionable destination for many affluent Italians.
The two main towns, Porto Ercole and Santo Stefano, both support delightful harbours, the more lively and bustling of the two is at Santo Stefano on the northern side. Grown up from a fishing village, Porto Santo Stephano now has an excellent fish market and is lined with plenty of restaurants that attract many large, prestigious and luxurious sail and motor yachts. On the opposite side of Monte Argentario lies Porto Ercole, one of the most famous and picturesque ports in all of Tuscany. Four old fortresses, La Rocca, Filippo, Santa Carolina and Stella, stand dominating the hillsides surrounding the natural harbour of Porto Ercole, from where you can then head out to explore Elba, Sardinia and the rest of the Italian coast.
The long promenade along the now chic and modern marina is frequented all summer long by ‘beautiful people’ visiting this place now associated with pleasure, good food, boats and relaxation. Both ports offer good locations to start your exploration of the promontory and the neighbouring islands that form the lower part of the Tuscan Archipelago; Giglio, Giannutri and Montecristo. Monte Argentario itself has a wealth of little coves that are only accessible by boat offering you the opportunity to escape, relax and unwind in this unique part of Italy.
