Approaching the port of Angra dos Reis

Your choice of itinerary will vary, and we recommend that you speak to one of our charter experts who has been there and can give you expert advice. But here are some of the typical highlights of an Angra charter:

Angra dos Reis (translated as King Cove) is 151km south of Rio and the suggested jumping-off point to begin your charter if you are flying into Rio de Janeiro. Marina Verolme offers good secure dockage, a restaurant offering local cuisine, and a marina store. If you prefer to arrive by helicopter it can be arranged for your group and you may disembark directly at the marina for embarkation on your yacht.

Ilha Grande 'The Big Island” 192 square Km and is steeped in history since the 1500’s with stories of pirates, treasure, slavery and smuggling. Today it is not very populated and is known for its green vegetation and for the azure waters which surround it.

Of the 106 beaches you have ocean beaches for surfing like Lopes Mendes or quiet bays to anchor overnight, like the bay of Das Palmas. Lopes Mendes beach has the finest white sand that squeaks underfoot. It has a texture similar to cornstarch leaving only a fine, powdery, film on your feet. Preta beach (Black beach) has dark monazite sand, and houses the ruins of the old prison. Parnaioca has a wreck of an old freighter and is good for wreck diving. Bananal beach has exquisite yellow sand.

There are four Environmentally Protected Areas that exist in Ilha Grande, where cars are forbidden to help preserve the natural beauty and cleanliness of the area.

Vila (village)do Abraao offers shopping, restaurants, churches, internet cafes and nightlife for the those who have the urge to get up and dance to the sound of forro music, a popular genre of music originally developed in the Northeast.

A small bay inside Ilha Grande is Saco do Ceu. The attraction is its calm waters and on starry nights it reflects the stars into the sea hence the name (sky sac).

brazil - angra - gipoia island

Ilha da Gipoia lies opposite Angra dos Reis and is a 30 minute boat ride away. It has many luxury villas available to rent or privately owned ones that are kept secret in the lush vegetation. Again the main attraction is the beautiful beaches, fauna and flora. Dentista Beach is the place to see and be seen. More than 100 boats anchor on busy summer weekends to party in the hopes of sighting a Brazilian celebrity or two.

In the summer the island of Ilha de Caras attracts the largest amount of famous people per square meter in Brazil.

Paraty (Parati in Portuguese), unlike Angra dos Reis, offers tranquil waters for sailors and is in Ilha Grande Bay on the mainland, 125 miles from Rio. This special town has unique colonial roots offering a wealth of history for those wishing to see how things used to be. Visit the town’s famous church Igreja de Nossa Senhora dos Remédios. Walk along the narrow stone, automobile free streets, visit the Historical Center, take a hike out to the waterfalls, follow the gold trail, visit the old fishing village of Trindade or stop and sample the Cachaca at Porto de Pinga. Forget about the woes of the world, listen to the musicians and take in as much local culture as you dare.

Once your sailing adventure ends, head up the coast two hours north of Rio to the low-key, yet stylish resort town of Buzios. Originally settled by European pirates and made famous by Brigitte Bardot in the 60’s, this once sleepy fishing village today boasts hundreds of small boutique hotels, known as pousadas, each with its own unique atmosphere in every price range. Fisherman still work here from dusk until dawn – find the bronze statues depicting their traditions.

You may want to rent a beach buggy to explore all 20 beaches hidden in the coves along this peninsula, 6 km long by 4 km wide. It is impossible to get lost here. Sip cocktails in the afternoon in the shade of a beachside bar and dance the night away in one of the Ibiza style clubs.

Or hire a guide and take an ecological walk in either the Emerências Reserve or the Tauá Reserve.

Mata Atlantica Forest. Covering a distance of 3,000km along the Atlantic Ocean coastline, the mountains boast the Mata Atlantica forest, designated as part of the World Biosphere Reserve since 1992. Unfortunately, only 10% of this forest lives on today having been cleared mainly for sugar cane farming and urban settlements. It still has 950 resident species of birds, almost 200 of which are endemic. Orchids abound and the woolly spider monkeys, colored marmosets and golden lion tamarins play. For those who wish to hike the trails a guide can be hired to accompany and educate you on this truly fascinating region.

It is impossible not to like this region of Brazil - we highly recommend that you go for it!
